Augmentin is used to treat a wide variety of infections, including:

  • gonorrhea,
  • middle ear infections,
  • skin infections,
  • upper and lower respiratory tract infections, and
  • infections of the genital and urinary tract.

Augmentin contains two active ingredients that extends the antibiotic activity to a wider range of infections. The rationale behind this is due to the addition of clavulanic acid which has special activity against beta-lactamase producing bacteria. These infections can cause resistance against certain penicillin antibiotics including amoxicillin by itself.

Augmentin is also used before some surgery or dental work to prevent infection.

Augmentin is also used occasionally to treat a chlamydia infection during pregnancy.

Amoxicillin blocks the formation of bacterial cell walls, rendering bacteria unable to multiply and spread. The bacteria therefore break up and die.

Clavulanate enhances the effectiveness of amoxicillin by inhibiting the activity of a specific enzyme (beta-lactamase) produced by certain drug-resistant strains of bacteria.

The formulation of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid in Augmentin protects amoxicillin from degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes and effectively extends the antibiotic spectrum of amoxicillin to include many bacteria normally resistant to amoxicillin and other beta-lactam antibiotics. Thus, Augmentin possesses the properties of a broad-spectrum antibiotic and a beta-lactamase inhibitor.
